Overview
The North Country Food Co-Op is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual with strong interpersonal skills and a passion for the cooperative business model to run and facilitate our store as our new General Manager. The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors, a body of elected representatives from the member-owner base that provides strategic oversight and planning, and oversees our staff of approximately 15 full and part time employees. The General Manager will work within the constraints set by the Board’s policies to ensure achievement of organizational and financial results and goals set by the board.

- Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including written and oral skills, and comfort in presenting to a small group
Reports to:
Board of Directors (BOD), usually once or twice a month, with more frequent direct reporting to the Board President and/or designated Board member(s). Daily collaboration and information sharing with Assistant and Department Managers.
Job Description:
- Oversee compliance with the cooperative’s personnel policies
- Oversee compliance with all applicable laws regarding licenses, permits, health regulations, employment, etc
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, inspire and evaluate employees; Provide consistent feedback and, if necessary, restorative action as needed
- Develop and maintain a staff organizational structure that promotes fair distribution of work while maintaining excellent customer service
- Prepare a yearly budget in line with the Board of Directors’ goals
- Oversee both floor operations and back room operations
- Execute weekly payroll
- Maintain and oversee financials including, but not limited to, reconciliation of bank account, oversight of liabilities
- Develop an atmosphere of trust and accountability for the staff
Excellence in this position:
The general manager must have the ability to “have their hands in many pots”, yet also be able to delegate tasks as needed while maintaining a healthy relationship with their work. To excel in this position, our general manager would:
- Monitor and troubleshoot the store’s POS system as needed
- Be the ultimate “coverage person,” in case of sickness or otherwise of staff members
- Maintain knowledge of retail and industry trends
- Ensure the establishment and maintenance of a product mix that meets shoppers’ needs
- Execute an established margin strategy designed to keep the co-op competitive while also meeting budgetary needs and profits for growth
- Work with vendors and purchasing staff to ensure adequate inventory
- Promote smooth daily operations and exemplary customer service
Required skills and experience:
- Grocery and/or retail management experience is a must with a preference for co-op experience
- Financial reporting
- Retail and administrative functions/systems

- The general manager of our store should be ready to work with a dynamic, fun, diverse and hard-working group of people who are all dedicated to growing the co-op that supports the community of the greater Plattsburgh area as a downtown hub of essential grocery.
Status: Full-time, 40 hours per week, salaried, $45,000 annually
